Beeswax and Alum Pill

Napban-hwan

한글 납반환  ·  Pinyin La Fan Wan

蠟礬丸

衆手和勻, worked even with several pairs of hands at once, is a dispensing instruction rather than a figure of speech: the wax sets as it cools and the whole four nyang of alum has to go in before it does. 明白礬 is the clear refined alum, registered under 白礬. The transcription prints 癕 for 癰 and 温 for 溫; the corpus forms are printed above.

Donguibogam

Translation

Treats abscess and deep-rooted abscess, back-breaking sores, scrofula, fistulous sores and malign sores. It guards the inner membranes, drives out and resolves every toxin, and the swelling disperses from within of itself. Where a 疽 has broken out from drug toxicity, nothing else will treat it. Beeswax 2 nyang; stir into it 4 nyang of powdered clear alum, work it even with several pairs of hands at once, and make pills the size of a paulownia seed. Thirty pills each time, sent down with warm wine or boiled water, twice a day. For inner abscess and intestinal abscess it is especially effective. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two ingredients, and the alum is twice the wax. The wax is the vehicle — it makes a pill that holds together and releases slowly — and the alum is the whole of the medicine, which puts this formula in the astringent rather than the cooling line of the chapter: 衛護內膜, guarding the inner membranes, is the language of sealing a surface, not of draining heat. What it is actually for is the deep or unreachable abscess, the one the chapter has no way to open — 內疽ㆍ腸癰尤妙, best of all for inner and intestinal abscess. Taken thirty pills twice a day, it is a long course for something that cannot be lanced. The claim 如因藥毒發疽, 非此莫治, that nothing else will treat an abscess raised by drug toxicity, reads as a note about the mineral prescriptions elsewhere in this chapter and what they did to people. Alum by mouth is not something to repeat; it is an astringent that irritates the gut, and the conditions named here — a deep abscess, an intra-abdominal collection, tuberculous nodes — are the ones that need imaging, drainage and antibiotics rather than a pill. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
