Transform the Toxin Elixir

Hwadok-dan

한글 화독단  ·  Pinyin Hua Du Dan

化毒丹

浮石, pumice, is registered for this leaf as buseok; the Decoctions chapter also gives it as an alternative name of 水泡石, which is a separate headword from 海石, the clam-shell material. The vinegar flour paste that binds the pills is kept in the source text and translation only, as the corpus does elsewhere. 為 is given above as 爲 and 麫 as 麪; the interlinear notes are given in parentheses, the corpus reserving 《》 for source labels.

Translation

Treats a hundred kinds of malign sore and toxic swelling; it should be taken when the swelling is only just noticed. Wild aconite (steeped in vinegar and blast-fried) and pumice (burnt red, quenched in vinegar seven times, ground separately), 1 nyang each; frankincense and myrrh, 5 don each (ground separately); croton seed (husked), 49 of them (ground separately). Powder the above, bind with vinegar flour paste into pills the size of a pea, and send down five or seven pills in cold wine, taking free passage as the measure. — Jeongui 精義 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The most violent member of the draining group, and the method leaf pairs it with Oridaehwang-tang: in the young and robust, give Oridaehwang-tang or Hwadok-dan to get one or two free movements of the bowel. That is the whole therapeutic idea — the toxin of a new sore is to be carried out through the gut before it settles — and it stands opposite the chapter's 托裏 and 內托 arm, which supplements a depleted patient so the swelling is thrust outward instead. Against that background the shape of this prescription is clear enough: aconite and croton do the work, frankincense and myrrh are there for the sore itself, and the pumice is a mineral bulk, burnt red and quenched in vinegar seven times. **Contains wild aconite, whose diterpene alkaloids are cardiotoxic and have caused fatal arrhythmia at small doses, and croton seed, a violent purgative and a severe irritant that is also a tumour promoter. Five to seven pills of the two together, taken in wine, is a dangerous dose by any reading. This must not be prepared or taken.** A new boil or carbuncle is treated today by drainage when it points, and by antibiotics when it spreads; there is no version of this formula that is worth recovering. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
