Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治穀疸, 酒疸, 及水氣, 蠱脹. 黑丑(取頭末, 春八分, 夏九分, 秋七分, 冬一錢) 大黃(春八分, 夏九分, 秋七分, 冬一錢) 檳榔(春八分, 夏九分, 秋七分, 冬四分) 甘草(春八分, 夏九分, 秋七分, 冬四分). 右細末, 每服三錢, 五更時, 面東南, 井華水調服, 疾隨下卽愈, 忌生冷. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats grain jaundice and alcohol jaundice, and also water qi and gu distension. Black morning glory seed, first milling only — 8 pun in spring, 9 pun in summer, 7 pun in autumn, 1 don in winter; rhubarb the same; areca — 8 pun in spring, 9 pun in summer, 7 pun in autumn, 4 pun in winter; licorice the same. Grind to a fine powder and take 3 don at a dose at the fifth watch, facing southeast, stirred into water drawn at dawn. The disease passes downward and recovery follows. Clinical commentary 臨床

The only formula in these chapters whose every dose changes with the season, and the logic is consistent — largest in summer when the yang is outermost and the body can bear most, smallest in autumn. Winter splits the four: the two purgatives rise while areca and licorice fall. The name is a puzzle, as there is no ox bezoar in it. **Contains morning glory seed and rhubarb, both purgatives.
