Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治冒暑瘀熱, 食穀不消, 熱鬱發黃. 苦參三兩, 草龍膽一兩, 人參七錢半, 梔子仁五錢. 右爲末, 牛膽汁<span class='sochu'>一方用猪膽汁</span>和丸梧子大. 以大麥粥飮下五七十丸, 日二. 《入門》一名苦參元. 《得效》

Translation

Treats summerheat contracted with static heat, grain eaten and not digested, and heat depressed breaking out as yellowing. Sophora 3 nyang, gentian 1 nyang, ginseng 7.5 don, gardenia kernels 5 don. Powder them and bind with ox bile <span class='sochu'>one version uses pig bile</span> into pills the size of a firmiana seed. Take fifty to seventy down with barley congee broth, twice a day. Clinical commentary 臨床

Bitter throughout — sophora, gentian and gardenia are three of the most bitter medicinals in the materia medica, and bile is used as the binder. That choice is not incidental: bile is what the body itself produces, and a jaundiced patient is understood to have it in the wrong place.
