Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治食積疸. 白朮三兩, 山査肉ㆍ靑皮ㆍ蒼朮ㆍ神麴各二兩, 香附子<span class='sochu'>便製</span> 一兩半, 鍼砂一兩. 右爲末, 醋糊和丸梧子大. 空心, 鹽湯下七八十丸. 脾虛者, 須以參ㆍ朮ㆍ陳ㆍ甘, 作湯使. 《入門》

Translation

Treats food accumulation jaundice. White atractylodes 3 nyang; hawthorn flesh, green tangerine peel, atractylodes lancea and medicated leaven 2 nyang each; cyperus (child-urine processed) 1.5 nyang; needle filings 1 nyang. Powder them, make pills with vinegar paste the size of a firmiana seed, and take seventy or eighty on an empty stomach with salt decoction. Where the spleen is vacuous, ginseng, atractylodes, tangerine peel and licorice should be decocted and used as the vehicle. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Hwangdal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Needle filings are iron, and this chapter uses them in four formulas — here, in Daeonjung-hwan below, in Chimsa-hwan, and among the general prescriptions. What they treat is 黃胖, the yellow puffiness the chapter distinguishes from true jaundice: a sallow swollen pallor with a craving for earth and raw rice, which is iron-deficiency anaemia.
