Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治黃疸, 黃胖, 黃腫. 香附子一兩半, 鍼砂一兩, 陳皮ㆍ蒼朮ㆍ厚朴ㆍ靑皮ㆍ三稜ㆍ蓬朮ㆍ黃連ㆍ苦參ㆍ白朮各五錢, (生)甘草二錢, 製法服法同上. 可借此, 爲制肝燥脾之用. 鍼砂代以靑礬, 亦妙. 《入門》

Translation

Treats jaundice, yellow puffiness and yellow swelling. Cyperus 1.5 nyang, needle filings 1 nyang; tangerine peel, atractylodes lancea, magnolia bark, green tangerine peel, sparganium, curcuma, coptis, sophora and white atractylodes 5 don each; raw licorice 2 don. Preparation and dosing as above. This may be borrowed for the purpose of restraining the liver and drying the spleen. Green vitriol may be used in place of needle filings, and that is also excellent. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Hwangdal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The substitution note is the interesting part: green vitriol may replace needle filings. Green vitriol is ferrous sulfate and needle filings are metallic iron — two different iron preparations held to be interchangeable for the same condition. The chapter's general prescriptions at 5.10 include three vitriol pills on the same reasoning. 黃胖 and 黃腫, yellow puffiness and yellow swelling, are named alongside jaundice and treated by the same formula, though only the first is caused by bile. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
