Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治黃腫病最捷. 五倍子(炒黑)ㆍ神麴(炒黃) 各八兩, 鍼砂(炒紅醋淬)ㆍ綠礬(薑汁炒白) 各四兩. 右爲末, 薑汁煮棗肉和丸梧子大. 溫酒下六七十丸, 不飮酒, 米飮下. 終身忌食蕎麥麪, 犯之再發難治. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats yellow swelling disease most swiftly. Chinese gall (fried black) and medicated leaven (fried yellow) 8 nyang each; needle filings (fried red and vinegar-quenched) and green vitriol (ginger-juice fried white) 4 nyang each. Powder them, bind with jujube flesh boiled in ginger juice into pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take sixty or seventy down with warm wine; where wine is not drunk, with rice broth. Buckwheat noodles are to be avoided for life — transgressing, it recurs and is hard to treat. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Hwangdal)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two iron preparations together, filings and vitriol, at four nyang each. Chinese gall is the largest ingredient and is very high in tannin — which in modern terms binds iron and reduces its absorption, so the combination works against itself. 終身忌食蕎麥麪 — buckwheat noodles forbidden for life — is the most absolute dietary prohibition in these chapters.
