Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治咽喉腫痛, 牙關緊急, 或生瘡癰, 或愈後復攻胸脇, 氣促身熱, 不能坐臥. 牛蒡子二錢, 玄參ㆍ犀角ㆍ升麻ㆍ黃芩ㆍ木通ㆍ桔梗ㆍ甘草各一錢. 右剉, 水煎食後服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats the throat swollen and painful with the jaw clenched, or sores and abscesses arising, or after healing a renewed attack on the chest and flanks with hurried breath and fever so that one can neither sit nor lie. Burdock seed 2 don; scrophularia, rhinoceros horn, cimicifuga, scutellaria, akebia, platycodon and licorice 1 don each. Cut up, decoct in water and take after food. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Inhu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

愈後復攻胸脇, 氣促身熱 — after it seems healed, a fresh attack on the chest and flanks with hurried breath and fever. A throat infection spreading to the mediastinum, which is how untreated deep neck infections kill, and the Immun has noticed that it can follow apparent recovery. **Rhinoceros horn is CITES Appendix I and banned; it must be omitted.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
