Donguibogam

Translation

For throat impediment and moth swelling, swollen, painful, ulcerated and rotting so that neither water nor gruel goes in and death is a moment away: powder croton kernel and asarum in equal parts, roll the medicine in paper, twist both ends tight, cut it in two at the middle and put a piece up each nostril; presently the crown of the head goes ice-cold and the throat opens. — Jonghaeng 種杏 (Donguibogam · Inhu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

頭頂氷凉 — the crown of the head goes ice-cold, which is the sign the chapter waits for. **Croton is a severe vesicant and this puts it against the nasal mucosa. It must not be prepared.** What is described — a throat ulcerated shut with nothing passing — needs an airway, not a counter-irritant. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
