Donguibogam

Translation

Treats deafness. Two pieces of good live loadstone cut to the size of a jujube stone, with a little musk rubbed on the tip of each, packed into the two ear openings, and a piece of raw iron held in the mouth. Wait an hour, and it is done when the qi penetrates both ears with a rushing sound. Used diligently three to five times it heals. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · I)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Magnet in the ears and iron in the mouth, held until something is felt between them. It is the same principle as the iron-filings wine at 4.4.9, made entirely external, and the rushing sound is what the patient is told to wait for. **Musk is from a CITES-listed species.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
