Tongseong-san-gagambeop

한글 통성산가감법  ·  Pinyin Tong Sheng San Jia Jian Fa

通聖散加減法

Not an independent formula but a modification method: the base is the Seonmyeongnon's Bangpung-tongseong-san, from which the two purgatives are removed and ten eye medicines added. The Bogam lists it among the formulas for treating eye disease generally, so it is registered here under its own name.

Translation

Treats the eyes red and swollen, wind heat with raw lid margins, internal and external obstruction and screens, shrinking from the light and dread of the sun, inturned lashes with tears running, both lids red and raw, red threads and stagnant blood, and the like. Take Tongseong-san (its formula is in the Wind chapter), remove the mirabilite and the rhubarb, and add chrysanthemum, asarum, notopterygium, pubescent angelica, tribulus, horsetail, vitex, cassia seed, scrophularia and cicada moulting. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The one entry in the eye chapter that is openly a recipe for altering another formula rather than a formula of its own. Taking the mirabilite and rhubarb out of Bangpung-tongseong-san leaves its wind-dispersing and heat-clearing body without the purge, and the ten additions are the chapter's standard eye set — chrysanthemum, horsetail, cassia seed, tribulus, cicada moulting. The indications are the chronic lid and corneal conditions, where a purgative would be beside the point and a long course of the modified powder is what is wanted. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
