Translation

Treats lockjaw with loss of consciousness. Saposhnikovia, gastrodia, angelica dahurica, ephedra, red poria and tangkuei, 1 don each; mint, 7 fun; schizonepeta, silkworm and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add seven slices of ginger and decoct in water. — Uihak Jeonggam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The one formula in the lockjaw section built entirely of ordinary herbs — no aconite, no scorpion, no mineral — which makes it the only one here a modern practitioner could prepare. Saposhnikovia and gastrodia lead, silkworm supplies the wind-extinguishing action that scorpion carries elsewhere, and tangkuei nourishes. It is correspondingly weaker than its neighbours, and the Jeonggam clearly offers it for the case not yet in extremity. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
