Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治破傷風, 口噤ㆍ身强直. 防風ㆍ天南星等分爲末, 每二錢, 薑汁和溫酒調服, 以滓付瘡口上. 口噤者, 童便調下. 南星爲防風所制, 服之不麻, 可以開關ㆍ定搐. 《回春》 ○一名定風散. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats lockjaw with the jaw clenched and the body rigid. Saposhnikovia and arisaema in equal parts, powdered; 2 don each time, taken stirred into warm wine with ginger juice, and the dregs applied over the mouth of the wound. Where the jaw is clenched, take it stirred into boy's urine. Arisaema is restrained by saposhnikovia, so that taking it causes no numbness, and it can open the clenched jaw and settle the convulsion. Clinical commentary 臨床

The standard formula for lockjaw and still the one named in every textbook. Two drugs in equal parts, taken by mouth and the dregs packed on the wound, which treats the site and the systemic illness in one preparation. The pharmacological claim — that saposhnikovia restrains arisaema so that no numbness follows — is one of the clearest statements in the Bogam of a drug pair restraining each other's toxicity, and whether or not it is true it shows that compounders thought in those terms.
