Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治破傷風, 口喎ㆍ噤ㆍ肢體反張, 須臾欲死. 蝎梢七箇, 爲末, 熱酒調服, 日三. 凡患破傷風, 非此不除. 《入門》

Translation

Treats lockjaw with the mouth deviated and clenched and the limbs arched backward, the patient about to die within moments. Scorpion tail tips, seven, powdered and taken stirred into hot wine, three times a day. For whoever suffers lockjaw, without this it is not removed. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One drug and a flat assertion: in lockjaw, without scorpion it is not cured. The tradition held scorpion to be the specific for wind that has reached the sinews, and every formula in this section bar two contains it; here it stands alone. Twenty-one scorpion tails a day is a substantial dose of a neurotoxic animal drug, and in a patient already in opisthotonos the margin is nil.
