Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治同上. 白茯苓ㆍ黃芪ㆍ當歸各一錢二分, 白芍藥ㆍ防風ㆍ桔梗ㆍ五味子ㆍ川芎ㆍ麥門冬ㆍ桂皮ㆍ熟地黃ㆍ甘草各七分. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《精義》

Translation

Treats the same as the above. White poria, astragalus and Korean angelica, 1 don 2 fun each; white peony, siler, platycodon, schisandra, cnidium, liriope, cinnamon bark, prepared rehmannia and licorice, 7 fun each. Cut the above, make one packet, and decoct in water and take. — Jeongui 精義 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

治同上 ties this leaf to 托裏黃芪湯 immediately before it, and the two are best read as one pair from the 精義. Where the first leads with ginseng and astragalus, this one leads with white poria, and it carries a full 四物湯 inside it — prepared rehmannia, white peony, cnidium and Korean angelica — so it is the more Blood-building of the two. Platycodon and siler lift to the surface; platycodon in particular is the chapter's standing drug for bringing pus up and out. The practical distinction between the pair is how much fluid and Blood has been lost. Ginseng heads the formula when the person is flat and breathless; poria and the four Blood drugs head it when the sore is soggy and slow to close. Both belong to the supporting half of the chapter, against the draining half — 內疏黃連湯, 五利大黃湯, 千金漏蘆湯.
