Great Unity Spirit Essence Elixir

Taeeulsinjeong-dan

한글 태을신정단  ·  Pinyin Tai Yi Shen Jing Dan

太乙神精丹

金牙, gold tooth stone, has no entry in the herb list and is left out of the ingredients above, so five of the six minerals are recorded there. 曾靑, azurite, was unregistered when this entry was first written and is now entered: 石部 1.5.1 heads it as the solid, botryoidal grade of 空靑. The materials of the 六一泥 luting clay and the earthen crucible — 赤石脂ㆍ牡礪ㆍ滑石ㆍ黃礬ㆍ鹵土ㆍ蚯蚓屎 and the 甘土 — are apparatus rather than ingredients and are kept in the source text and translation only; 黃礬, 鹵土, 蚯蚓屎 and 甘土 have no herb entries either, and 牡礪 is the transcription's form for 牡蠣, kept as transcribed. The interlinear notes (高一尺五寸) and (無則以鹽代之) are given in parentheses, the corpus reserving 《》 for source labels; the transcription writes the second with 𥂁 for 鹽. 為, 温, 凣 and 褁 are given above as 爲, 溫, 凡 and 裹.

Translation

Treats sudden affront, cholera, corpse-infixion, malign qi, mania with demon speech, gu poisoning and bewitchment, and warm malaria; of all malign poisons there is none it does not treat. Cinnabar, azurite, orpiment, realgar and magnetite, 4 nyang each; gold tooth stone, 2 nyang 5 don. Of the six above, steep the cinnabar, orpiment and realgar in strong vinegar, and the azurite in good wine; seal them tightly with paper and sun them for a hundred days. Then grind each to a fine powder, mix with strong vinegar until the wetness is right, put it into an earthen crucible, lute it fast with six-to-one clay, and set it on an iron-footed ring stand (a foot and a half high). Give it fire by degrees, not letting the fire come near the bottom of the crucible, and stop after one full day and night; when it has cooled, take it out. The essence of the drug has flown and changed and lies set fast on the crucible above: five colours is the best of it, three colours next, one colour lowest, but what is bright and clear as snow is finest of all. If it has not all flown, give it fire again as before. Sweep it off with a fowl's feather, bind it with jujube paste into pills the size of a millet grain, and at daybreak on an empty stomach take one pill, increasing by one pill at a time and taking the effect felt as the measure. The old formula did not use magnetite and gold tooth stone; they are added now. Whoever takes this will certainly vomit and purge within five doses; once that is past it settles of itself. Begin with a pill the size of a millet grain and increase by one at a time up to the size of an adzuki bean, and stop there; it must not be made larger. If the medicine brings oppression and agitation, boil a decoction of cocculus root and drink it, and it settles at once. If the killing power of the drug is to be undone, eat well-boiled fat pork. For long-standing malaria turned to swelling with death near, one pill brings vomiting and recovery, and the malarial mother is cured as well. For concretions, conglomerations and accumulations, take one pill sent down with thin rice water. In every kind of sudden death where there is still a little warmth below the heart, prise the mouth open and give a knife-point of the powder stirred into thin rice water. Put nine knife-points of the powder into a crimson bag and tie it to the arm, the left for a man and the right for a woman; it is best of all for warding off miasmic pestilence and seasonal qi. — Cheongeum 千金. To make the earthen crucible: take two earthenware basins able to hold about two mal, coat the inside with sweet clay and let it dry hard. To make the six-to-one clay: red halloysite, oyster shell, talc, yellow vitriol, bittern earth (salt in its place if there is none) and earthworm castings, 2 nyang each. Mix sweet clay with strong vinegar into a paste, wrap the halloysite and the other three in it, calcine for one full day and night, take them out, powder them together with the bittern earth and the earthworm castings, and mix with vinegar to the consistency of thick gruel for use. — Cheongeum 千金. In compounding this drug, do it on a prospering day of the season, under a clear bright sky, having fasted and bathed. — Cheongeum 千金. I compounded one batch of Great Unity Spirit Essence Elixir. A woman of my household was oppressed by a demon in a dream, and after waking had heart pain she could not bear and lay stupefied and senseless; three pellets were taken and given her, and the pain stopped at once and her spirit woke, and she was already without illness. Afterwards it was given to others, and there was none in whom it did not answer like a spirit. — Bonsa 本事 (Donguibogam · Sasu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

This is not a decoction or a pill in the ordinary sense; it is an alchemical sublimate. Six minerals — cinnabar, azurite, orpiment, realgar, magnetite and gold tooth stone — are steeped in strong vinegar or good wine, sealed under paper and sunned for a hundred days, ground, dampened with vinegar, packed into an earthen crucible, luted fast with the six-to-one clay whose recipe the leaf also gives, and fired for a full day and night on a ring stand a foot and a half high. What is taken is not the charge but what flies from it and sets on the crucible above, swept off with a fowl's feather. The leaf grades the product by colour: five colours best, three next, one lowest, and bright as snow finest of all. The leaf is remarkably clear-eyed about what it has made. Within five doses there will certainly be vomiting and purging, it says, and once that is past it settles of itself; the dose rises one millet grain at a time with the effect felt as the measure, and must stop at the size of an adzuki bean. Two antidotes are written in — a decoction of cocculus root for the oppression and agitation, well-boiled fat pork to undo the killing power of the drug — which is a formula that expects to poison the person taking it. Around the pharmacy stands the ritual: the crucible built from two earthenware basins, the compounding set for a prospering day of the season under a clear sky after fasting and bathing, the powder in a crimson bag on the left arm of a man and the right of a woman. The case from the Bonsa at the end, the woman of the compounder's own household who woke from a nightmare with unbearable heart pain and was well after three pellets, is the Bogam's reason for keeping the whole apparatus. **This is a 鍊丹, an alchemical sublimate of cinnabar, orpiment, realgar, azurite and magnetite. What condenses on the crucible is a mixture of mercury and arsenic compounds; the firing drives mercury and arsenic vapour into the air of the room; and the vomiting and purging the leaf expects within five doses are the signs of acute heavy-metal poisoning. This must not be prepared or taken under any circumstances, and nothing in it can be made safe by any substitution.** The indications are worth reading as history — one preparation offered for possession, cholera, mania, gu poisoning, malaria with an enlarged spleen, abdominal masses and sudden death alike, which tells us how a universal remedy was imagined rather than what it did. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
