Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs carry this pill and the rest are padding: realgar and croton frost at three nyang each, against five don of everything else. Ginseng, liriope and licorice behind them are there to take the edge off, not to treat anything, and the asarum, platycodon, Sichuan pepper, gleditsia pod and roasted aconite make up the warming and dispersing half of a Cheongeumbang formula of some age. Five honeyed pills with warm water is a small dose of a very large batch, which is the only reason the arithmetic is survivable at all. The first edition halves the two chief weights to a nyang, which is the kind of variant worth keeping in sight here. 尸疰 — corpse-infixion — is this chapter's name for illness understood to pass from the dead into the living, and the ten kinds are an enumeration inherited from the Cheongeumbang rather than anything the Bogam works out. What the category actually collects, read honestly, is wasting and transmissible illness, the same ground the Taxation chapter covers under 傳尸; the answer this leaf gives to it is a purge. **Contains realgar, an arsenic sulfide, and croton frost, a violent purgative and vesicant, each at three nyang to the batch, with roasted aconite and asarum besides. This is a cumulative arsenic dose given with a drastic cathartic and must not be prepared or taken under any circumstances.** It is recorded for textual completeness. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
