Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治一切諸痢. 鸎粟殼(蜜炒) 三兩, 縮砂ㆍ肉豆蔲(煨)ㆍ乳香各二錢半, 木香ㆍ丁香ㆍ訶子ㆍ藿香ㆍ當歸ㆍ黃連ㆍ厚朴ㆍ陳皮ㆍ靑皮ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ甘草(灸) 各五錢, 枳實ㆍ乾薑(炮) 各二錢半. 右爲末, 蜜丸彈子大, 水一盞, 棗一枚, 同煎至七分, 去棗, 和滓服. 《袖珎》

Translation

Treats all the dysenteries. Honey-stir-fried poppy husk, 3 nyang; amomum, nutmeg roasted in dough and frankincense, 2.5 don each; costus root, clove, chebula, agastache, tangkuei, coptis, magnolia bark, tangerine peel, unripe tangerine peel, white peony and roasted licorice, 5 don each; bitter orange and blast-fried dried ginger, 2.5 don each. Powder, make honey pills the size of a pellet; decoct one in a cup of water with a jujube down to seven tenths, remove the jujube and take it dregs and all. — Sujin Bang 袖珎 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Seventeen drugs around three nyang of poppy husk, made into large pills that are then boiled in water with a jujube and drunk with the dregs. The pill-decocted-as-a-draught is what the name water-boiled points to, and it solves a real problem: a formula this large cannot be decocted fresh each time, but a pill can be kept and reconstituted.
