Donguibogam

Translation

Treats every dysentery, red or white, healing in two or three doses. Poppy husk honey-stir-fried to a red colour and ginger-prepared magnolia bark, 2.5 nyang each. Powder, and take 2 or 3 don each time on an empty stomach stirred into rice water. Avoid raw, cold and toxic foods. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two drugs in equal weight, one of them opium-bearing, and a promise of healing in two or three doses. The name means it hits a hundred times out of a hundred. It would indeed stop almost any diarrhoea, which is the trouble: in an invasive dysentery arresting the stool without clearing the infection is how a colitis becomes a perforation. The chapter gives it without that caution, and the warning belongs here. **This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
