Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治傷寒表裏不解. 滑石三錢, 甘草一錢, 石膏ㆍ黃芩ㆍ桔梗各七分, 防風ㆍ川芎ㆍ當歸ㆍ赤芍藥ㆍ大黃ㆍ麻黃ㆍ薄荷ㆍ連翹ㆍ芒硝ㆍ荊芥ㆍ白朮ㆍ梔子各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 葱白三莖, 豉半合, 同煎服. 此方乃<a href='/formulas/igwon-san'>益元散</a>與<a href='/formulas/bangpungtongseong-san'>防風通聖散</a>合劑也. 益元散通裏, 通聖散發表, 兩得其宜也. 《河間》

Translation

Treats cold damage in which neither the exterior nor the interior resolves. Talc, 3 don; licorice, 1 don; gypsum, scutellaria and platycodon, 7 fun each; saposhnikovia, chuanxiong, tangkuei, red peony, rhubarb, ephedra, mint, forsythia, mirabilite, schizonepeta, atractylodes and gardenia, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, three stalks of scallion white and half a hop of fermented soybean, and decoct together. This prescription is Igwon-san and Bangpung-tongseong-san compounded together: Igwon-san frees the interior and Tongseong-san breaks out at the exterior, and both are rightly served. — Hagan 河間 (Donguibogam · Seo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Liu Wansu combining his own two great formulas and explaining why in a single line: the six-to-one powder frees the interior, the sagacious powder breaks out at the exterior, and a case where neither will resolve needs both. The double resolution of the name is that claim. Seventeen drugs is a great deal and most of them are at five fun, but the architecture is clear and the talc at three don is what makes it a draining formula rather than merely a sweating one. The scallion and fermented soybean at the end are the Shanghanlun's own gentle diaphoretic, added to a formula that hardly needs it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
