Translation

Treats the interior pattern of cold damage. It is the wonderful medicine that replaces the three Seunggi decoctions, Daesiho-tang and the greater and lesser chest-draining decoctions. Rhubarb, 2 don; mirabilite, magnolia bark, bitter orange, bupleurum, scutellaria and peony, 1 don each; licorice, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water down to half, strain, stir in a spoonful of iron-rust water and take. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A consolidation formula, and the claim is stated plainly: this one replaces the three Seunggi decoctions, the Great Chai-hu and both chest-draining formulas. That is the late Ming simplifying the Shanghanlun's careful gradations into a single prescription, and whether it is an improvement or a loss depends on who is prescribing — a skilled hand would rather choose among six, and a busy one would rather have one that covers them. The iron-rust water stirred in at the end is the only unusual element and is there, on the Immun's reasoning, to weigh the formula down and settle the qi. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
