Translation

Treats miasmic malaria and cold malaria, with divine effect. Nutmeg and katsumada galangal seed, 2 fruits each — one roasted in the ashes and one raw; magnolia bark 2 chi — 1 chi steeped in ginger juice and roasted, 1 chi used raw; large licorice 2 nyang — half roasted, half raw; fresh ginger 2 lumps — one roasted in the ashes, one raw. Cut each of the above, combine and divide into two packets, add 2 jujubes and 1 mume plum, decoct in water and take warm on an empty stomach. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · Haehak). Also called Gyohae-eum, and also called Saengsuk-eum. — Yuchwi 類聚

Clinical commentary 臨床

The whole method is in the alternate name: 生熟飮, the raw-and-cooked drink. Every one of the four main drugs is halved, one half roasted and one half raw, and the pairing is the formula's argument — the roasted half warms and holds, the raw half moves and disperses, and a paroxysm that swings between chill and fever is met on both swings at once. 雙解, double resolution, and 交解, crossed resolution, say the same thing from the other side. Pharmacologically it is a mild aromatic warming drink: two nutmeg-family fruits, magnolia bark, ginger, licorice, jujube and a single mume plum. There is nothing in it aimed at the fever itself, and nothing toxic. It is the gentlest prescription in this part of the chapter, and the one most plainly aimed at the gut rather than the paroxysm — which is why it reads as supportive care for a patient whose digestion has been wrecked by repeated attacks. Weights are given for the two-packet batch as the leaf states; the licorice figure above is per packet. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
