Clinical commentary 臨床

Fifteen drugs, none of them above seven fun, and not one of them aimed at the fever. This is the mass-dissolving counterpart to the aromatic paroxysm formulas: atractylodes and tsaoko fruit lead, lesser galangal, dried ginger and cinnamon heartwood warm the centre hard, and green and aged tangerine peel with bitter orange and platycodon work the qi of the flank where the lump sits. The pinch of salt added to the packet is there to carry the formula downward and inward. The design tells you what the chapter thinks a long-standing malaria mass is made of — cold and damp congealed, not heat — and it treats it with warmth and movement rather than with the purgatives of Sobyeok-won. Taken on an empty stomach, as a daily drink, it is the patient, long-haul version of the same project. Cinnamon heartwood (桂心) is registered here under the cinnamon bark entry, which is the corpus's convention. Pinellia is toxic raw and must be properly processed. The flank mass the leaf describes is most often a malarial spleen; a hard mass with a history of relapsing fever needs imaging and a parasitological diagnosis. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
