Disperse Wind and Resolve Toxin Powder

Sopunghaedok-san

한글 소풍해독산  ·  Pinyin Shu Feng Jie Du San

疏風解毒散

The transcription writes the name 踈風觧毒散; 踈 is normalized to 疏 and 觧 to 解, and the chapter's own section head already prints 疏風解毒散. It also writes 紫蘓, normalized to 紫蘇 — the corpus has 蘇 203 times and 蘓 none — and the preparations 炒ㆍ微炒ㆍ灸 are set in parentheses after their drugs in the corpus manner. 灸 is left as the transcription has it. There is a stray space in the transcription between 黑豆 and 七十粒 at the line break, which is set closed here. 蒺藜子 is entered under 白蒺藜 with the seed named in the preparation, as at museongjahyeonghwa-hwan; 當歸鬚, the hair roots, is entered under 當歸.

Clinical commentary 臨床

A Jikji formula built to open a closed surface. Ephedra, angelica dahurica, asarum, pubescent angelica and tribulus make the wind-dispersing front; tangkuei hair-root, cnidium, red peony and dried raw rehmannia work the blood; white morning-glory seed, fried mulberry bark, fried atractylodes, areca and bitter orange take the damp downward. Black soybean, perilla leaf and ginger go in at the boil. The reasoning is that a generalised itching eruption persists because what should come out cannot, so the formula vents above and drains below at the same time. This is not a cooling prescription — it has no scutellaria, no coptis, no forsythia — and it is the only internal formula in this section that works by opening rather than by cooling. That makes it the Jikji's answer to the chronic, dry, scattered eruption rather than to the hot, weeping one. **White morning-glory seed is a drastic purgative and ephedra is a sympathomimetic that raises blood pressure and heart rate; neither belongs in a long course, and the combination is not one to take unsupervised.** Asarum at 7 pun is a small dose, but it carries aristolochic acid in some commercial material and is a drug to be sourced carefully or avoided. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
