Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治感傷風寒, 頭痛ㆍ身疼ㆍ鼻塞ㆍ聲重. 荊芥ㆍ蒼朮ㆍ白芷ㆍ陳皮ㆍ麻黃各一錢, 甘草五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 葱白二莖, 水煎服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats injury by wind cold with headache, body pain, a blocked nose and a heavy voice. Schizonepeta, atractylodes lancea, angelica dahurica, tangerine peel and ephedra, 1 don each; licorice, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two stalks of scallion white, and decoct in water. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five drugs for the common cold, and the indication is exactly the one the Wind chapter gives for 傷風證 — blocked nose, heavy voice, aching head and body. Schizonepeta and ephedra open the surface, angelica dahurica clears the nose, atractylodes lancea and tangerine peel dry the damp, and that is the whole of it. The grand name promises more than six drugs can deliver, but as a first-day cold remedy it is about right, and the scallion-and-ginger finish makes it something a household could put together. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
