Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治傷寒ㆍ傷風表證, 頭項强ㆍ百節痛, 陰陽未分皆可服. 香附子ㆍ紫蘇葉各二錢, 蒼朮一錢半, 陳皮ㆍ川芎ㆍ白芷各一錢, 甘草五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 棗二枚, 水煎服. 《得效》

Translation

Treats the exterior pattern of cold damage and wind damage, with a stiff head and nape and aching in all the joints; it may be given before yin and yang are distinguished. Cyperus and perilla leaf, 2 don each; atractylodes lancea, 1 don 5 fun; tangerine peel, chuanxiong and angelica dahurica, 1 don each; licorice, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water. — Uibang Yuchwi 得效 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Hyangso-san with the two head drugs added, and the name says so: chuanxiong reaches the vertex and angelica dahurica the forehead and face, so a formula for a general exterior pattern becomes one for an exterior pattern with headache. The clause that made it popular is the last one — it may be given before yin and yang are distinguished. For a physician facing a patient at the first day of an illness, a mild aromatic formula that will not do harm whichever way the case turns is worth more than a precise one given too early. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
