Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

無子宜服. 山茱萸ㆍ天門冬ㆍ麥門冬 各二兩半, 破故紙(炒) 四兩, 兎絲子ㆍ枸杞子ㆍ覆盆子ㆍ蛇床子ㆍ巴戟ㆍ熟地黃ㆍ韭子(炒) 各一兩半, 龍骨ㆍ黃芪ㆍ牡蠣ㆍ山藥ㆍ當歸ㆍ𤨏陽 各一兩, 人參ㆍ杜沖 各七錢半, 陳皮ㆍ白朮 各五錢, 黃狗外腎(酥灸) 二對, 爲末. 用紫河車 一具(蒸製), 同門冬ㆍ地黃爛搗, 他藥幷爲細末, 煉蜜和勻, 搗千杵作丸梧子大, 每取百丸, 空心及臨臥, 以溫酒或鹽湯任意呑下. 《入門》

Translation

To be taken where there is no child. Cornus, asparagus and ophiopogon 2 nyang 5 don each; psoralea (stir-fried) 4 nyang; cuscuta, lycium fruit, rubus, cnidium, morinda, cooked rehmannia and garlic chive seed (stir-fried) 1 nyang 5 don each; dragon bone, astragalus, oyster shell, dioscorea, angelica and cynomorium 1 nyang each; ginseng and eucommia 7 don 5 pun each; tangerine peel and white atractylodes 5 don each; yellow dog's testis and penis (butter-roasted) two pairs. Powder them. Take one placenta, steamed and processed, and pound it to a pulp together with the two ophiopogons and the rehmannia; powder the other medicines finely, mix evenly with refined honey, pound a thousand strokes and make pills the size of a firmiana seed. Take a hundred at a time on an empty stomach and at bedtime, sent down with warm wine or salt decoction as preferred. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Buin)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty-three medicinals, and the chapter's fullest answer to infertility read as kidney vacuity cold. The structure is the standard essence-securing group — cuscuta, rubus, cnidium, morinda, psoralea — built out with dragon bone and oyster shell to hold what is secured. The two animal ingredients are the distinctive part. Placenta is the tradition's chief substance for replenishing the essence and blood at once, and it is pounded with the moistening medicinals rather than powdered with the rest because it cannot be dried. **Placenta carries a risk of bloodborne infection and is not used in modern practice.
