Translation

Treats rising qi and cough in the old and depleted. Perilla seed, 1 seung, pounded separately to a powder; apricot kernel, 1 seung, with the skins, tips and twinned kernels removed, ground separately to a paste; the juice of fresh ginger, the juice of raw rehmannia and white honey, 1 seung each. Pour the two juices over the perilla and apricot, wring out the liquid, pound and wring the dregs again so that all the flavour comes out, then mix in the honey, put it in a vessel and boil it in a double boiler to the consistency of malt sugar. One large spoonful each dose, three times a day. Or leave out the rehmannia juice and put bamboo sap in its place, which is also good. — Gihyo 奇效 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Another paste rather than a decoction, and made in a double boiler so that nothing scorches. The two seed drugs are expressed with ginger and rehmannia juice, wrung twice, and set with honey; what the patient takes is a sweet oily syrup, a spoonful three times a day. For an old patient with a chronic cough that form is the whole merit of it. Perilla seed and apricot kernel are both oily and both bring the qi down, and in honey they coat the throat as they go. 老虛人, the old and depleted, is the indication, and the formula asks nothing of them but a spoonful. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
