燒灰散

治同上 refers back to the preceding leaf, 蝸牛散, and so to 瘰癧 broken or unbroken. 幷 is left as the transcription prints it; the corpus does not normalize 幷 and 並. No amount is given beyond 大, large, so no gram figure is entered. The oil for the unbroken case is named without being specified and is not entered as an ingredient.

Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治同上. 大田螺 幷殼肉, 燒存性爲末. 破者乾糝, 未破者油調付. 《得效》

Translation

Treats the same as above. A large rice-field snail, shell and flesh together, burnt with its nature preserved and powdered. Where the node has broken, dust it on dry; where it has not, work it up with oil and apply it. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One drug, and the whole of the method is in which way it is applied: dry on a node that has opened, mixed with oil on one that has not. A large rice-field snail burnt whole, shell and flesh together, short of ash. What is left after burning is mostly calcium carbonate with some charred organic matter — a drying, mildly absorbent powder. On a weeping sinus it would soak up discharge, which is what 乾糝 is for; worked into oil it becomes an occlusive ointment for intact skin. Both uses are reasonable wound care by the standards of the period and neither of them is treatment. 瘰癧 is tuberculous lymphadenitis, and the sequence of entries here — snail, rice-field snail, badger — is the chapter working through the cheap animal powders because none of the expensive mineral ones closed a sinus either. **Charred animal material dusted into an open wound carries an infection risk.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
