Raw Badger Powder

Saenghwan-san

한글 생환산  ·  Pinyin Sheng Huan San

生獾散

治同上 refers back through 燒灰散 to 蝸牛散, and so to 瘰癧 broken or unbroken. 獾, the badger, has no herb id, so the ingredient list is left empty and the drug is named in the report. 幷 is left as the transcription prints it. The oil is named without being specified.

Translation

Treats the same as above. One live badger: take the four feet, the navel, the tail, the snout and both ears. Burn them with their nature preserved and powder them, work the powder up with oil, wash the sore first and then paint it on, and it answers at once. — Yuchwi 類聚 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The extremities only: four feet, the navel, the tail, the snout and both ears of a live badger, charred short of ash, ground, worked into oil and painted on a washed sore. Nothing from the body of the animal is used. That selection is the formula. The parts named are the ones that project and the ones that burrow, and the reasoning is the same sympathetic logic that put a cat skull and a bat into 猫蝠散 two leaves earlier: 瘰癧 was understood as 鼠瘻, the rat-hole disease, and the badger is the animal that digs the burrow out. The one practically useful instruction is 先洗瘡, wash the sore first, which the 洗傅方 leaf at the end of the section makes into a formula of its own. **Taking the parts from a live animal is gratuitous cruelty, and charred animal material in an open wound carries an infection risk; badgers are a reservoir for bovine tuberculosis and for rabies. This must not be prepared.** Tuberculous lymphadenitis needs tissue diagnosis and antimycobacterial treatment; a charred-tissue paste reaches nothing, and 立效, it answers at once, is not a claim the lesion allows. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
