Wash and Dressing Method

Sebu-bang

한글 세부방  ·  Pinyin Xi Fu Fang

洗傅方

Two preparations in one leaf: a wash of two drugs for which no amounts are given, and a dressing powder of four. 傅 is left as the transcription and the corpus both print it. The plaster applied after the wash is named only as 膏藥, a plaster, without being specified, and is not entered. 唾, the patient's own saliva, is the vehicle for the powder and is named in the method only.

Translation

Treats scrofula. Decoct angelica dahurica and schizonepeta, wash with it warm, wipe the sore dry and apply a plaster. After the pus and discharge have all come away, powder pinellia, arisaema and dragon's blood 1 don each with a little calomel, work it up with saliva and apply it. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The last leaf of the 瘰癧 section, and the most sensible thing in it. A decoction of angelica dahurica and schizonepeta for a warm wash, the sore wiped dry, a plaster on, and then — only after the discharge has stopped — a drying powder of pinellia, arisaema and dragon's blood with a little calomel, worked up with saliva. The sequencing is what distinguishes it. Everything else in the section goes straight onto an open node with a caustic; this one washes first, waits for 膿汁出盡, and only then dresses. Dragon's blood is a genuine astringent haemostatic, and the wash drugs are aromatic and mildly antiseptic. As wound care it is close to competent. **Contains calomel, a mercury compound absorbed through broken skin, and raw pinellia and arisaema, both toxic unless properly processed; saliva as a vehicle on an open wound carries an infection risk.** And the sequence has a false premise: a tuberculous sinus does not reach 膿汁出盡 on its own. The discharge continues for as long as the mycobacterium is untreated, so the second stage of this formula was rarely reached. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
