Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治下焦結熱尿血. 藕節二錢, 當歸一錢, 山梔仁八分, 小薊ㆍ生地黃ㆍ滑石ㆍ通草ㆍ蒲黃各五分, 甘草三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 竹葉七片, 同煎服. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats bound heat in the lower burner with bloody urine. Lotus root node 2 don; angelica 1 don; gardenia kernel 8 pun; cephalanoplos, fresh rehmannia, talc, tetrapanax and cattail pollen 5 pun each; licorice 3 pun. Cut up, make one packet, add seven bamboo leaves, decoct together and take. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Hyeol)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The tradition's classic formula for bloody urine — Sogye-eumja is in every formulary — and the Bogam's version leads with lotus root node at four times the cephalanoplos. Both stanch; talc and tetrapanax free the passage; cattail pollen keeps what is stanched from clotting in the bladder. The formula is still prescribed for haematuria with cystitis, and its logic is sound: stop the bleeding without stopping the flow. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
