Translation

Treats joint-running wind. Akebia, 2 nyang, finely cut and decocted in long-flowing water, drunk off at one draught on an empty stomach. A man, from wind damp, contracted white tiger joint-running wind, with pain over the whole body and unable to set foot to the ground for three years; a hundred prescriptions had no effect. One day he dreamt he was given an akebia decoction, and was cured. He thereupon took this medicine, and after taking it his whole body itched severely and red spots the size of small beans broke out on the upper body, vanishing as the hand passed over them; sweat came out as far as the waist and stopped there, and the upper body no longer hurt. The next day he decocted and took it as before, and the lower body too broke out in red spots, the sweat came out as far as the feet, and the pain was gone. Afterwards several people were treated and all were proven. Also called Moktong-tang. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The best case report in the chapter, and the only one that records a sequence of events in order: itching, then red spots the size of beans on the upper body, sweat to the waist, pain gone above; the next day the same below. Whatever that was — a drug eruption as plausibly as a cure — somebody watched it happen and wrote down what they saw, including the detail that the spots vanished under the pressure of a hand, which is a blanching erythema. The dream that prescribed the remedy is part of the genre. Akebia is a diuretic and two nyang at a draught is a large single dose. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
