Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治血虛陰火痛風, 及腰以下濕熱注痛. 黃栢(酒浸, 焙乾)爲末, 每一錢, 薑汁和酒調服. 必兼四物湯間服之妙. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats painful wind of blood vacuity with yin fire, and damp heat pouring pain from the loins downward. Phellodendron, wine-steeped and dried over a fire, powdered; 1 don each time, taken stirred into wine with ginger juice. It is best necessarily combined with Samul-tang, taken alternately. — Danggye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One drug, wine-prepared, and an explicit instruction to alternate it with the four-substance decoction — which makes it not a monotherapy but half of a two-part prescription: phellodendron drains the damp heat, Samul-tang replaces the blood, and neither is given alone. That division of labour is Danggye's signature and his usual answer to yin vacuity with fire. For gout in the lower limb, wine-prepared phellodendron directed downward is a coherent choice, and the name — hidden movement — refers to the drug working out of sight in the deep tissues. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
