Translation

Treats retching and vomiting from depressed qi, or gullet-blocked food that will not go down. Ground pot-bottom soot, 5 don; realgar and borax, 2 don each; frankincense, 1 don 5 fun; mung bean and black soybean, forty-nine grains each. Powder them; soak thirty smoked plums in water, stone them and take the flesh, mix it with the powder and pound it even, make pills the size of a bullet, and coat them with 2 don of cinnabar. Hold one pill in the mouth each time and wash it down with hot cake steeped in tea; if there is no vomiting for a good while, the medicine has worked. If there is vomiting, hold another pill in the mouth until it melts and take it. Fatty food, salt and vinegar, and fits of anger are to be avoided. Also called Idu-hoehyang-dan, the Two Beans Return the Aroma Elixir. — Uihak Immun 入門 · Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Guto)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A pill held in the mouth and melted rather than swallowed, which is the design: a patient who cannot get food past the gullet can still absorb something from a lozenge. The test built into the instructions is also worth noticing — if the pill stays down for a good while the medicine has worked, and if it comes back another is given. **Contains realgar, an arsenic sulfide, and cinnabar, a mercuric sulfide. This must not be prepared.** Arsenic and mercury are both cumulative poisons and neither has any place in treatment; the two beans, the soot and the frankincense are inert by comparison. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
