Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治傷寒ㆍ傷風, 頭痛ㆍ體疼ㆍ惡寒ㆍ無汗. 蒼朮二錢, 荊芥ㆍ藁本ㆍ乾葛ㆍ麻黃ㆍ甘草(灸) 各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三片, 葱白二莖, 水煎服. 《集驗》

Translation

Treats cold damage and wind damage with headache, bodily aching, aversion to cold and no sweating. Atractylodes lancea, 2 don; schizonepeta, ligusticum sinense, pueraria, ephedra and honey-roasted licorice, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and two stalks of scallion white, and decoct in water. — Jipheombang 集驗 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Atractylodes lancea at double everything else, which is what the name points at: this is a damp-drying formula that happens to release the exterior, rather than the reverse. Ligusticum sinense is the drug for a headache at the back of the head and schizonepeta the mildest of the surface-opening herbs, so the combination suits the aching, heavy, chilled patient of a damp climate.
