Translation

Treats qi cough with the forming of phlegm. Arisaema and pinellia, 3 nyang; alum, 1 nyang, ground and dissolved in water, in which the two drugs are steeped overnight; tangerine peel, 5 nyang, steeped a day and a night in rice-washing water with the white scraped off, of which 3 nyang are taken; cyperus, 3 nyang, steeped a full day in soapberry water and dried in the sun. Powder them without letting them near the fire, make pills the size of a paulownia seed with a ginger-juice paste, and give fifty to seventy down with ginger decoction. This is a secret formula handed down in the family, and has been proved again and again. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Every drug in this formula is processed before it is used and none of them is heated: arisaema and pinellia steeped overnight in alum water, tangerine peel in rice-washing water, cyperus in soapberry water. 不見火, never shown the fire, is stated as a rule, and the alum and soapberry steeping is doing the work that roasting would otherwise do. **Arisaema and pinellia are both toxic in the raw state, and here they are deliberately not heated. Alum steeping is a traditional processing method and does not make them safe. This must not be prepared.** The family-secret claim at the end is the Dansim's own and is the sort of provenance note the Bogam copies without comment. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
