Translation

Treats the clenched-mouth dysentery. Stone lotus seed, the husk knocked off and the plumule kept along with the flesh, ground to a powder; 2 don each time, stirred into aged rice water. This illness comes of toxic qi surging upward against the heart and lung; this is borrowed to free the heart qi, and the thought of food comes back at once. Then support it with tangerine peel stir-fried with east-wall earth and powdered, briefly decocted with ginger and jujube. — Uihak Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The instruction to keep the plumule — the bitter green germ at the centre of the lotus seed — is precise and deliberate: that part is the one the tradition assigns to the heart, and the whole rationale here is that the vomiting comes from heat pressing on the heart rather than from the stomach. East-wall earth, taken from the side of the house the morning sun strikes first, is one of the stranger materials in the chapter, used as a stir-frying medium to make the tangerine peel settle the stomach. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
