Translation

Treats the clenched-mouth dysentery. Coptis, 8 nyang, cut up; fresh ginger, 4 nyang, sliced. Stir-fry them together until scorched, discard the ginger, powder the coptis alone, and make pills with aged cooked rice the size of a paulownia seed. Take seventy or eighty each time: for red dysentery in aged rice water, for white dysentery in a tangerine-peel decoction, and for red and white dysentery in a decoction of aged rice and tangerine peel. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The same ginger-fried coptis as the Hyanggang-san earlier, in eight times the quantity and made into pills, with the vehicle changed according to whether the stool is red, white or mixed. Pills are the right form for a vomiting patient — nothing to taste, nothing to smell — and the three vehicles let one preparation serve three diagnoses, which is this chapter's favourite economy. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
