Translation

Treats the clenched-mouth dysentery with heat severe at the mouth of the stomach. Coptis, 3 don; ginseng and stone lotus seed, 2 don each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct to a thick juice, and sip it little by little. If it is vomited, drink again; only let one sip go down the throat and it opens. Then use the navel-poultice method. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The clenched-mouth dysentery is the chapter's name for a dysentery in which the patient can no longer keep anything down, and it is the condition's lethal turn: a patient losing fluid below and unable to take any in above. The instruction is the valuable part — a thick decoction sipped drop by drop, given again if vomited, because one sip that stays down breaks the cycle. That is exactly how oral rehydration is given to a vomiting patient today, and the Hoechun arrived at it by observation. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
