Translation

Treats the clenched-mouth dysentery with vexation of the heart, heat of the hands and feet, and headache. This is toxic qi surging upward against the heart and lung, which is why there is retching and no eating. Insam-paedok-san (its formula is in the Cold chapter) with 1 don of coptis, seven stone lotus seeds and three hundred grains of aged granary rice added; add three slices of ginger and two jujubes and decoct together. Also treats hot dysentery. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The Vanquish Toxin Powder — an exterior-releasing formula — turned to a dysentery, which looks like a category error and is the Uigam's deliberate point: headache, vexation and hot palms with the vomiting mean the illness is not confined to the bowel. Three hundred grains of aged granary rice gives the formula its name and its purpose: a starch decoction that a vomiting patient can hold down. That is rice water as rehydration, prescribed by the grain. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
