Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

引熱令下行. 田螺 二箇, 入麝香少許, 擣爛, 罨臍中, 以帛包定. 《丹心》

Translation

Draws the heat and makes it travel downward. Two rice-field snails with a little musk put in, pounded to a pulp, laid on the navel and bound in place with a cloth. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

External treatment for a patient who cannot swallow, which is the clinical logic that makes the navel poultices in this chapter worth attention: when nothing can be given by mouth, something must be done at the surface. Crushed snail flesh is cooling, moist and will stay in place under a cloth; musk is the tradition's penetrant, added to carry the action inward. The preceding formula directs the physician to use both together. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
