Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治噤口痢危重者, 用之立愈. 王瓜藤 連莖葉, 經霜者, 晒乾燒灰, 香油調, 納臍中卽效. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats the clenched-mouth dysentery in a critical case; used, it heals at once. Snake gourd vine with stem and leaf, frost-touched, sun-dried and burnt to ash, stirred up with sesame oil and put into the navel — immediate effect. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The last of the four navel treatments for the clenched-mouth dysentery, and the one the Uigam reserves for a critical case. Ash and oil packed into the umbilicus has no plausible systemic action, and the formula is best read as what a physician does when the patient can take nothing by mouth and is dying — which is also the honest reading of the claim that it heals at once. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
