Translation

Treats the yellow membrane rising upward with pain of the eye and a closed roughness. Rhinoceros horn filed to shavings 2 don; notopterygium, scutellaria and plantago seed 1 don each; typhonium and ophiopogon 5 pun each. Cut up as one packet, decoct in water, and take after food. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A yellow membrane rising from below inside the eye is a hypopyon — pus layered in the anterior chamber — and it means a severe infection. The formula is cooling and draining with the horn at the head of it, which was the strongest thing available; today this is an emergency requiring antibiotics. **Rhinoceros horn comes from a CITES-listed species and cannot lawfully be traded; water buffalo horn is used in its place.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
