Translation

Treats abdominal pain with spontaneous diarrhoea. It is Ijung-tang with the licorice doubled. Also called Sasun-tang. — Uibang Yuchwi 類聚 (Donguibogam · Han)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One drug doubled and the formula gets a new name, which is how closely these variants were tracked. Doubling the licorice makes all four drugs equal and shifts the formula toward relaxing the cramp: licorice is the tradition's drug for urgency and spasm, and abdominal pain is named first in the indication where the parent formula names it second. The four obediences of the name are the four drugs brought into accord. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
