Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

吐之輕劑. 人參蘆二錢, 赤小豆ㆍ甘草各一錢半, 瓜蔕一錢. 右末, 每取一二錢, 虀汁調下. 《丹心》

Translation

A light preparation for vomiting. Ginseng neck 2 don; adzuki bean and licorice 1 don 5 pun each; melon stalk 1 don. Powder them and take 1 or 2 don at a dose stirred into sour pickle brine. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · To)

Clinical commentary 臨床

人參蘆, the ginseng neck, is the rhizome at the head of the root, and the tradition holds that it does the opposite of the root itself: ginseng supplements and raises, the neck ejects. Discarding it when preparing ginseng is standard for that reason. The melon stalk is cut to a quarter of the ginseng neck, and licorice is present to moderate, which is what makes this the light preparation the name claims. **Contains melon stalk, which is toxic.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
