Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治一切水濕腫滿. 黑丑<span class='sochu'>頭末</span> 二兩, 大黃一兩, 芫花ㆍ甘遂ㆍ大戟各五錢, 輕粉一錢. 右末, 水丸小豆大. 初服五丸, 每服加五丸, 以溫水下. 《宣明》

Translation

Treats all water and damp with swelling and fullness. Black morning glory seed <span class='sochu'>first powder</span> 2 nyang; rhubarb 1 nyang; genkwa flower, kansui and euphorbia root 5 don each; calomel 1 don. Powder them and make water pills the size of a small bean. At the first dose take five pills, and add five pills at each dose thereafter, taken down with warm water. — Seonmyeongnon 宣明 (Donguibogam · Ha)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The formula three other chapters send their readers here for, and the one the Oedema chapter misdirects to the Dampness chapter. Its place is 8.8.6, in the purging section of the Purging Method chapter. 初服五丸, 每服加五丸 — five pills at the first dose and five more at each dose after — is the dosing scheme, and it is the chapter's most careful. A drastic purgative is started below its effective dose and raised in fixed steps until the bowel answers, which is titration in everything but name. The three flowers of the name are genkwa, kansui and euphorbia root, the same three that carry Sipjo-tang. **Contains calomel, a mercury compound, with three toxic euphorbias.
