Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治六脉虛芤而衄吐血. 升麻ㆍ白芍藥各二錢, 熟地黃一錢, 當歸ㆍ川芎各七分半, 生地黃ㆍ柴胡ㆍ黃芪ㆍ牡丹皮各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats the six pulses vacuous and hollow with nosebleed and vomiting of blood. Cimicifuga and white peony 2 don each; cooked rehmannia 1 don; angelica and chuanxiong 7 pun 5 ri each; fresh rehmannia, bupleurum, astragalus and moutan bark 5 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Hyeol)

Clinical commentary 臨床

芤, the hollow pulse — like pressing a scallion stalk, firm at the edges and empty in the middle — is the pulse of acute blood loss, and the formula is built for it. Samul-tang supplements what is gone; cimicifuga and bupleurum lift what remains so it does not sink. The three yellows of the name are not coptis, scutellaria and phellodendron but the two rehmannias and astragalus, all of which have 黃 in their names.
