Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治衄血不止. 白礬(枯)ㆍ白龍骨各三錢, 麝香一分半. 右爲細末, 每用少許. 先以冷水洗淨鼻內, 蘸藥塞鼻, 尤妙. 《得效》百草霜細末二錢, 水調服, 名曰黑神散. 又吹入鼻中.

Translation

Treats nosebleed that does not stop. Calcined alum and white dragon bone 3 don each, musk 1 pun 5 ri. Powder finely and use a little at a time: first wash the inside of the nose clean with cold water, then dip the medicine and plug the nose — better still. Two don of finely powdered stove soot stirred into water and taken is called Black Spirit Powder; it is also blown into the nose. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Hyeol)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A nasal pack rather than a medicine taken — alum and dragon bone are both astringent, and dipping a plug in the powder and packing the nostril is what an emergency department still does with a different powder. 先以冷水洗淨鼻內 — first wash the nose with cold water — is the useful detail. Cold constricts, and clearing the clot lets the pack reach the bleeding point. **Contains musk, CITES Appendix I and prohibited in trade.
