Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治衄血不止, 乃肺金受相火所制然也. 雞蘇葉ㆍ黃芪ㆍ生地黃ㆍ阿膠珠ㆍ白茅根各一錢, 麥門冬ㆍ䓀莄ㆍ蒲黃(炒)ㆍ貝母(炒)ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ甘草(灸) 各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三片, 水煎服. 兼以黃丹吹入鼻. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats nosebleed that does not stop, which is the lung metal being restrained by ministerial fire. Chinese artichoke leaf, astragalus, fresh rehmannia, ass-hide glue beads and imperata root 1 don each; ophiopogon, platycodon, cattail pollen (stir-fried), fritillaria (stir-fried), mulberry root bark and licorice (mix-fried) 5 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger, decoct in water and take. Alongside, blow minium into the nose. — Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Hyeol)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The nose is the lung's orifice, and a nosebleed that will not stop is read as the lung failing under fire. The formula cools and moistens the lung and adds the chapter's two standing stanchers, imperata root and cattail pollen. **The minium blown into the nose is lead tetroxide, absorbed through the nasal mucosa.
